Well, nice to get a Monday off. Weather was nice, so I sat outside at my favourite cafe, and contemplated the day. Since reading about Jeff’s upcoming Speedy, I thought why not take a bus into town and have a look at the Boutique. Only a week ago yesterday, I got my Seamaster.
First thing, I asked the sales associate if I could look at the Speedmasters, as a friend is going to get one soon. They had so many, I lost track. Everything you could imagine in that model line, including a few special editions.
Anyway, I finally saw the hesalite crystal model which it turns out Jeff is getting, which I didn’t know at the time, but to me it just stood out because of that hesalite.
Next, I wanted to take another look at the Hour Vision Orbis. Will be doing that with Ian again on Saturday. Even though I was just in there, I can’t wait for my next visit.

Lastly, I took another look at the 50th Anniversary 007 Limited Edition. Unfortunately, I don’t think it gets enough credit, because of the photos. When you actually see it in the display case, you can’t even see the 007 engravings on the dial. You have to look at it on an angle, and the fine engraving becomes apparent, but it is so subtle that it does not detract from the simple beauty of the dial. Only in certain lighting, is the obvious 007 revealed, as shown in the photos:

In the photo, the 007s almost look silver, but it must just be the way the light is hitting the engraved bits. When you see the dial straight on, it just looks like a very lacquered/polished dial, with the diamond at 7 o’clock (on the 36mm size watch only) and the red "50" on the bezel. I really spent quite a lot of time looking at it, and ended up realizing that it really is done very intricately, and it is definitely one that needs to be seen in person. I even told the sales associate about the negative comments I had heard about the 007 branding and the dial, mainly because of the pics on the internet. The 007 branding opinions are not going to change much, but I think the aesthetic value of the watch has not been done justice by the pics on the internet. I still would not change my Seamaster with the ceramic bezel and lacquered dial for the 007, though.
If I could afford it, I might get myself the blue version of the Seamaster: blue ceramic bezel, and blue lacquered dial. It is quite a light blue, and gives the watch a totally different look. A lot more casual and sporty, as I find the black really quite dressy for a sports watch (not a complaint, just an observation). The more I see of this blue dial, the more I come to like it:

I also found out that the new Seamaster POs and 300M models have an updated version of the Caliber 2500, the 2500D. I had not realized there were versions A, B, C and D. I won’t go into it here, because the subject has become quite controversial on some of the other forums, and I really don’t know enough about the mechanics to offer good opinions. I just know that my watch has the lastest version. I also know it is running only 4-5 seconds per day fast, which is very good for a new watch. Better than any Omega I have owned so far, including one with the 8500 movement.
I gather that one of the reasons for not fitting the Seamaster 300M with the 8500 movement, is because it would necessitate thickening the case.
